Because their usual home, the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu, is still being renovated. Rangers confirmed Awka City Stadium as their league home in September, and chief executive Amobi Ezeaku put it simply: “We will play in Awka.” It’s their second spell there, after the 2022/23 abridged season.
Before that, Rangers played their early “home” games in Abeokuta and Owerri. Their first league game in Awka was a 1-0 win over Ranchers Bees on Matchday 5.
Rangers are top of the table with four wins, a draw and a defeat from six games. Meanwhile, they’ve scored nine and conceded six.

Abia Warriors are tenth on eight points, with two wins, two draws and two defeats. However, their results have swung from week to week.
Away from home, Imama Amapakabo’s side have won one of three, and they’ve lost the other two without scoring. Their club profile is on our Abia Warriors team hub.
It’s very close. For example, FotMob’s record lists 15 league meetings, with seven Abia Warriors wins, six Rangers wins and two draws. Abia also beat Rangers in February 2025 on their way into the top four that season, as ThisDay reported.
So, despite the gap in the table, Abia have a habit of making this fixture difficult for Rangers.
First, for Rangers, the obvious name is Chimobi Igwilo, who scored twice at Kun Khalifat. For Abia, it’s Chukwuemeka Obioma. The former NPFL top scorer set up Ikoi Etta’s opener and then scored twice against Bendel Insurance, according to the official NPFL report.
Neither club had announced injury news for Sunday at the time of writing. We’ll update this preview if confirmed team news emerges.
A Rangers win keeps them top whatever happens elsewhere. Rivers United and Barau FC are a point behind on 12, and Plateau United are on 11, according to our live NPFL table.
Rangers also have Africa in mind. They face MC Alger in the CAF Champions League second preliminary round, with first legs on 16-18 October and return legs on 23-25 October, as CAF confirmed. Even so, two weeks is plenty of recovery time, so Sunday shouldn’t need heavy rotation.
We lean towards a Rangers win. They’re at home, they’re top, and they bounced back quickly from the Ikorodu defeat. In contrast, Abia have struggled away, with no goals in two of their three trips.
