The NPFL 2026/27 season kickoff has been confirmed for Friday, August 28, and the league has released the full Matchday 1 fixture list along with a record prize pot for the clubs chasing the title. Here’s everything Nigerian football fans need to know before a ball is kicked.
League officials have locked in the weekend of August 28–30 to open the new campaign. As a result, the 2026/27 season will run all the way through to 28 May 2027, covering 38 matchdays across nine months of football. That’s a long haul, and early form in these opening fixtures often sets the tone for a club’s entire campaign.
The opening weekend features one standalone Friday night fixture, followed by the remaining nine matches on Sunday. In fact, the league has deliberately spread the schedule to give the season opener its own spotlight, as first reported by Sports247 Nigeria.

A few of these stand out immediately. Rivers United host Plateau United in a clash between two continental campaigners, while Rangers International — seven-time champions — face a reinforced Katsina United side at home. Meanwhile, Bendel Insurance and Warri Wolves renew their South-South derby rivalry, and newly promoted sides Barau FC and Ikorodu City both get tough tests of their top-flight credentials right away.
What makes this season different is the money behind it. The NPFL champions will collect a historic ₦1 billion prize, with the runners-up taking home ₦500 million and third place earning ₦300 million. That’s a significant jump from previous seasons, and it should sharpen the title race considerably — clubs that might once have coasted through mid-table now have real financial incentive to push for a top-three finish.
