NPFL Matchday 1 Results: Rivers United, Barau FC Win

The 2026/27 NPFL season is officially open, and Matchday 1 delivered exactly the kind of chaos Nigerian football fans expect from an opening weekend. Nine matches produced late goals, a share of penalties and one fixture washed out by rain. Here’s every NPFL Matchday 1 result, plus the storylines worth knowing before Matchday 2.

Rivers United and Barau FC Make Statements

Rivers United were the most convincing winners of the weekend, beating Plateau United 2-0 through goals from Abdulrasheed Dabai and Wasiu Falolu. As a result, one of the league’s most consistent continental campaigners has started this season the way it means to go on.

Barau FC, meanwhile, gave notice that promoted sides won’t simply make up the numbers this year. They came from behind to beat Nasarawa United 3-1, with Al’Amin Umar and Sugau Aliyu scoring twice in the closing stages to turn a tight game into a comfortable win. Ikorodu City and Doma United Also Winning

Ikorodu City needed a comeback of their own, going behind early to Ranchers Bees before winning 3-1, sealed by a Farouk Salami penalty in the 87th minute. That said, Doma United had a smoother afternoon, beating Sporting Lagos 2-0 thanks to goals either side of the hour mark from Sadiq Rilwan and Daniel Simon.

Niger Tornadoes also opened with three points, edging Enyimba 2-1 after Michael Olalusi’s 83rd-minute winner cancelled out a late Enyimba equaliser. However, the day’s most dramatic finish came at the Rangers-Katsina fixture.

Late Drama at Enugu and Ilorin

Rangers International looked set to open with a defeat at home to Katsina United, who led through Luis Dadong’s 38th-minute strike deep into stoppage time. In fact, it took a seventh-minute-of-injury-time free-kick from Chibueze Oputa, which the Katsina goalkeeper failed to keep out, to rescue a 1-1 draw for the hosts.

A similarly late twist unfolded at the Kwara United vs Kano Pillars fixture. Kano Pillars led 2-0 by the half-hour mark through Shola Abdulraheem and Rabiu Ali, but Kwara United fought back with two goals from Alex Jerry — the second arriving in the seventh minute of added time — to share the points in a 2-2 draw.

Bendel Derby and a Rain-Hit Fixture

Bendel Insurance came from behind to beat local rivals Warri Wolves 2-1 in an early South-South derby, with Alex Oweilayefa’s 47th-minute goal completing the turnaround after Kayode Oke’s penalty had levelled the scores. Meanwhile, heavy rain in Aba meant Abia Warriors and Kun Khalifat FC couldn’t finish their fixture, with the match suspended goalless at the 73rd minute and the remaining 17 minutes rescheduled.

Shooting Stars had already been tipped as one to watch this season in our Shooting Stars season-opener preview, and they delivered, opening the weekend with a 2-1 win over Inter Lagos on the season’s first night.

What It Means for Matchday 2

Six different clubs won on opening weekend, which suggests this season’s title race won’t be a two-horse affair early on. Barau FC and Doma United, in particular, look like promoted sides capable of causing problems for the league’s established names. As always, treat any early-season form as informed opinion rather than certainty — one result rarely tells the full story. If you’re following the NPFL alongside a bet, only wager what you can afford to lose. 18+.

Matchday 2 has already thrown up a curveball off the pitch: the highly anticipated Sporting Lagos vs Ikorodu City derby has been rescheduled to 30 September after a venue clash with a political rally.
