However, it was first shifted to Friday, 4 September after reports emerged that the venue would be unavailable, before being postponed indefinitely once it became clear a political rally was booked for the same ground on the original matchday.
As a result, one of the most anticipated fixtures of the young 2026/27 NPFL season has been shunted around the calendar before a ball was even kicked. Sporting Lagos had built a genuine publicity push around the game, selling tickets and preparing matchday merchandise for what was expected to be one of the biggest crowds of the campaign’s opening weeks.
The decision has not gone down well with supporters. Fans have publicly criticised the authorities for prioritising a political event over a football fixture that Sporting Lagos had spent weeks promoting, with several supporters accusing organisers of putting politics ahead of the league’s growth. That frustration is understandable — Lagos derbies are rare in Nigerian top-flight football, and a first-ever meeting between two clubs from the same city doesn’t come around often.
Sporting Lagos have since appealed to their fanbase for patience, confirming that tickets already purchased for the original date will remain valid for the rescheduled fixture on 30 September.
