NPFL Matchday 2 Results: Kano Pillars Win Five-Goal Thriller

The NPFL matchday 2 results delivered plenty of drama on Sunday, with Kano Pillars surviving a five-goal thriller against Niger Tornadoes while Nasarawa United and Plateau United picked up their first wins of the new season. Here’s how every fixture played out.

Kano Pillars 3-2 Niger Tornadoes

Kano Pillars took control early at the Sani Abacha Stadium, with Ubong Friday and Fabian Nworie putting the hosts two goals up inside the first half. Nworie then added his second nine minutes after the restart to make it 3-0.

However, Niger Tornadoes refused to fold. Godfrey Joseph and Wasiu Jimoh pulled two goals back in the closing stages, setting up a nervy finish. Despite sustained late pressure, Kano Pillars held on to claim maximum points and move off the bottom of the table.

Plateau United 1-0 Kwara United

At the New Jos Stadium, Plateau United recorded their first victory of the campaign courtesy of a 29th-minute strike from Alex Aghahowa. The Peace Boys had to work hard for it, but a single goal proved enough to see off Kwara United and open their points tally for the season.

Nasarawa United 1-0 Bendel Insurance

In Lafia, Nasarawa United also opened their account for the campaign. Sam Pam struck the winner in the 55th minute in a tightly contested match, giving the Solid Miners a hard-fought home win over Bendel Insurance.

Kun Khalifat 0-0 Barau FC

The day’s other fixture at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri ended goalless, as Kun Khalifat FC and Barau FC shared the points in a cagey affair that neither side could break open.

What It Means for the Table

Matchday 2 was kind to the sides that started slowly. Nasarawa United and Plateau United both move off zero points, while Kano Pillars’ win — despite the late scare — lifts them clear of the relegation zone this early in the season. Meanwhile, Niger Tornadoes and Bendel Insurance will look to bounce back when the NPFL returns for matchday 3 on 12–13 September.
