Kano Pillars FC are northern Nigeria’s most successful football club. Nicknamed “Sai Masu Gida” (the Home Owners) and owned by Kano State, they have won four NPFL titles, reached the 2009 CAF Champions League semi-finals and launched the career of former Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa. In 2026/27 they are unbeaten after four games under new coach Daniel Ogunmodede.

Who is the Kano Pillars coach in 2026/27?

Daniel Ogunmodede is Kano Pillars’ head coach for 2026/27. The club appointed him in July 2026, and he previously led Remo Stars to their first NPFL title in 2024/25.

His arrival ended a turbulent spell in the dugout. Evans Ogenyi started 2025/26 in charge but left in November 2025 after a poor start, and Mohammed Babaganaru then steered the team to survival. Meanwhile, Ahmed Musa stepped down as General Manager in June 2026 and became Sports Ambassador for the club and Kano State, although he is still registered as a player.

What are Kano Pillars’ 2026/27 results so far?

Kano Pillars have two wins and two draws from four NPFL games: 2-2 at Kwara United, 3-2 v Niger Tornadoes, 4-1 v Doma United and 1-1 at Inter Lagos.

The standout display so far came against Doma United, who arrived in Kano top of the table with three straight clean sheets. Pillars won 4-1, and veteran Ahmed Musa scored the third goal. When were Kano Pillars founded?

Kano Pillars were founded in 1990, when three Kano clubs (WRECA FC, Kano Golden Stars and Bank of the North FC) merged into one state-backed team. Kano State Government still owns the club and appoints its board.

The aim was simple: give northern Nigeria a club that could challenge the southern sides that had dominated the league. Their first NPFL title came in 2007/08. After that, the early 2010s became their golden era, with three straight league titles in 2011/12, 2012/13 and 2013/14. No northern Nigerian club has won more NPFL championships.

The 2009 CAF Champions League run remains the club’s finest continental campaign. Pillars knocked out Egypt’s Al Ahly in the second round on away goals (1-1 in Kano, 2-2 in Cairo), which earned them the nickname “Ahly Killers”. They then came through the group stage before losing the semi-final 5-0 on aggregate to Heartland of Owerri.

However, the club’s lowest point came in 2022. The NFF deducted three points after a former club chairman assaulted an assistant referee during a home match against Dakkada FC, and the deduction sent Pillars down. Where do Kano Pillars play their home games?

Kano Pillars play at Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, which opened in 1998 and holds roughly 16,000 to 18,000 spectators. It is one of the most intimidating away trips in the NPFL.

In practice, the noise, heat and packed stands have derailed plenty of title challenges. That said, the club has spent recent spells away from home. Pillars played their first 11 games of 2024/25 at Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina while Sani Abacha was renovated. Then, in October 2025, fans attacked Shooting Stars players and officials, and the league fined the club, deducted three points and closed the stadium. The NFF later cut the ban to five matches. Pillars are back at Sani Abacha for 2026/27, where they have won both home games so far.

What trophies have Kano Pillars won?

Kano Pillars have won four NPFL titles (2007/08, 2011/12, 2012/13 and 2013/14) and the 2019 Federation Cup (Aiteo Cup). They also won the 2008 Nigerian Super Cup.

Which famous players have played for Kano Pillars?

Ahmed Musa is the most famous Kano Pillars player, while long-serving midfielder Rabiu Ali is the club’s modern icon. Both are still in the squad in 2026/27.

Ahmed Musa came through GBS Academy and JUTH before a breakthrough season on loan at Kano Pillars in 2009/10. From there he moved to VVV-Venlo, CSKA Moscow, Leicester City and Al-Nassr, scored twice against Iceland at the 2018 World Cup and later captained the Super Eagles. He returned to Pillars in 2021 and again in October 2024. Indeed, he was still scoring in September 2026, netting against Doma United.

Rabiu Ali has spent most of his career in Kano and remains a key figure; he has already scored twice this season. How did Kano Pillars do in recent seasons?

Kano Pillars have finished in the bottom half in each of their three seasons since promotion: 11th in 2023/24, 9th in 2024/25 and 15th in 2025/26.

• 2023/24: 11th with 52 points (15 wins, 7 draws, 16 defeats) in their first season back.
• 2024/25: 9th with 53 points, despite playing their early home games in Katsina.
• 2025/26: 15th with 48 points. The three-point deduction, a stadium ban and a coaching change made it a hard season, and Pillars only confirmed survival on the final day.

As a result, the club rebuilt in summer 2026 with a new coach and eight new faces. The early signs are good, with no defeats from the first four games.

Kano Pillars are known for direct, physical football built on pace in wide areas, and for one of the loudest home crowds in Nigeria. Under Ogunmodede they are adding more structured pressing.

The “Sai Masu Gida” name reflects deep territorial pride. For many fans across Kano, Katsina, Kaduna and the wider North, Pillars carry the region’s flag in the NPFL.
