World Cup 2026 June 17 Fixtures: Preview & Betting Tips

June 17 is the biggest day yet of World Cup 2026. Five matches are on the schedule — including Ghana’s Group L opener, two African teams in action, and the hugely anticipated England vs Croatia blockbuster. For Nigerian fans making the most of this tournament without the Super Eagles, today is packed from afternoon right through to after midnight. Here is your complete guide to every June 17 fixture, with kick-off times in WAT (UTC+1), quick team previews and our best betting tips for each game.

Argentina vs Algeria — Group J (2:00 AM WAT)

Kick-off: 2:00 AM WAT (already played by the time most read this)
Venue: MetLife Stadium, New York

Argentina opened their World Cup defence against Algeria in one of the most eagerly anticipated early kick-offs. Lionel Messi leads Argentina as four-year defending champions — a side that won in Qatar 2022 and arrived in 2026 as tournament favourites. Algeria, meanwhile, qualified from Africa in Group J and will have been fired up against the world champions.

Algeria are a team capable of the unexpected — they won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019 and showed resilience in qualifying — but Argentina’s squad depth makes them near-impossible to stop over 90 minutes. Visit the Algeria World Cup 2026 guide for full squad and group details.

Bet tip: Argentina to Win — ~1.20. A safe anchor leg for accas.

Austria vs Jordan — Group ? (5:00 AM WAT)

Kick-off: 5:00 AM WAT

Austria face Jordan in an early morning kick-off for Nigerian fans. Austria qualified from Europe and are a solid mid-tier side built around RB Leipzig and Bundesliga players. Jordan make their first World Cup appearance. This is Austria’s to win comfortably.

Bet tip: Austria to Win — ~1.30. Low drama, high probability.

Portugal vs DR Congo — Group K (6:00 PM WAT)

Kick-off: 6:00 PM WAT
Venue: NRG Stadium, Houston

This is the African match of the day and carries enormous emotional weight. DR Congo qualified for the World Cup for the very first time, reaching this stage after defeating Nigeria on penalties in the November 2025 CAF playoff. The Leopards have made history — and now they face Portugal in their debut match.

Portugal, led by Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes, are one of the tournament’s most dangerous attacking units. They have averaged over three goals per game in their build-up and go into this opener as heavy favourites. DR Congo’s best chance lies in staying compact, limiting Portugal’s wide play, and striking on the counter with Yoane Wissa and Cédric Bakambu as the danger men.

It will be a massive ask. Portugal are ~1.28 to win, and the margin of victory could be significant. But DR Congo have already defied expectations to be here — and the entire continent will be cheering for the Leopards to make it hard for Ronaldo and company. Find our full DR Congo preview at the DR Congo World Cup 2026 guide.

Bet tip: Portugal to Win — ~1.28. Over 2.5 Goals — ~1.90 is the value play if you expect Portugal to open up.

England vs Croatia — Group L (9:00 PM WAT)

Kick-off: 9:00 PM WAT
Venue: AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas

This match directly affects Ghana’s World Cup destiny. Ghana are in Group L alongside England and Croatia, meaning tonight’s result in Arlington shapes the group table before the Black Stars even kick off. A Croatia win would open Group L wide up; an England victory would put the Three Lions in the driving seat.

England go in as favourites at ~1.65. Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka give England firepower to stretch any defence, and their squad depth is unrivalled in this group. Croatia, though, are the consummate tournament survivors — Luka Modric leads a team that reached the 2018 final and 2022 semi-final. Croatia will make England work for every goal.

This is a match to watch closely, not just for the result but for the tactical picture it sets up for Ghana. If England win comfortably, the Black Stars know that beating Panama tonight becomes even more important.

Bet tip: England to Win — ~1.65. Both Teams to Score — ~1.75 if Modric’s side find a way through.

Ghana vs Panama — Group L (Midnight WAT / 00:00)

Kick-off: Midnight WAT (00:00 June 18) / 7:00 PM ET June 17
Venue: BMO Field, Toronto

The night ends with the game every Nigerian and West African fan has been waiting for. Ghana face Panama in their World Cup opener, and it is the Black Stars’ best chance of a Group L victory given the quality of England and Croatia. Panama are defensively solid and ranked 34th in the world — surprisingly above Ghana’s 73rd — but their attacking threat is limited.

Antoine Semenyo is Ghana’s key man with Mohammed Kudus unavailable. The Bournemouth forward brings direct pace and an ability to operate in tight spaces that will be vital against Panama’s massed defence. Jordan Ayew adds experience, while the midfield battle between Ghana’s playmakers and Panama’s disciplined 4-4-2 will be where the match is won.

Bet tip: Ghana to Win — ~2.20. Under 2.5 Goals — ~1.70. See our full preview at the Ghana World Cup 2026 guide.
