Senegal are no pushovers. The Teranga Lions qualified from CAF in commanding fashion and carry genuine quality in every department. Sadio Mané’s career may be winding down but he remains influential, and younger talents like Ismaïla Sarr and Iliman Ndiaye give Senegal pace and directness. Coach Aliou Cissé will organise his side to frustrate France and hit on the counter.

The head-to-head record favours France, but Senegal are a completely different proposition to the team that drew with them years ago. This is a Group I opener that could go either way — though France’s squad depth makes them the more likely winners.

Norway come into this tournament with enormous expectations riding on Erling Haaland. The Manchester City striker is one of the favourites for the Golden Boot and will be desperate to make his mark on football’s biggest stage. Norway’s squad is well organised and clinical — Haaland alone makes them dangerous from any position.

Iraq secured their place at the World Cup through the AFC qualifying rounds and will be proud to be here. Their strengths lie in a compact, well-drilled defensive shape. But against Haaland and company, holding firm will be very difficult.

Norway should get the job done, though the heat and occasion may tighten things up in the first half.

However, the gap in quality is wide. Argentina’s squad is loaded at every position, and Messi’s creativity, combined with Julián Álvarez’s relentless pressing, gives them a platform that Algeria will struggle to contain for 90 minutes.
