Valentine Ugwu’s stoppage-time goal was cancelled out by Abdullahi Musa as Kano Pillars and Sporting Lagos drew 1-1 in Kano.

Kano Pillars vs Sporting Lagos ended 1-1 at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano on Saturday, 3 October 2026. Valentine Ugwu put the visitors ahead in first-half stoppage time. Then Abdullahi Musa equalised three minutes after the break, in the opening game of NPFL Matchday 7. Kano stayed unbeaten, but they have now gone three league games without a win.
Kano Pillars and Sporting Lagos drew 1-1 on Saturday, 3 October 2026, with a 4pm WAT kick-off. Here are the goals.
Sporting Lagos took the lead when a defender failed to clear. Voice of Nigeria reported that Ugwu pounced on the follow-up and rolled the ball into an empty net. Sources differ on the exact minute, so we say stoppage time. Kano levelled from a corner. Captain Rabiu Ali delivered it, and Musa headed in at the back post, according to the same report. One data provider lists Ahmed Musa as the scorer, but the match reports credit Abdullahi Musa.
The key moment was a series of saves by Sporting Lagos goalkeeper Clinton Lawani. Voice of Nigeria reported that he had not started a league game this season. Coach Jeffery Buter picked him ahead of first-choice Ebenezer Harcourt. Lawani then stopped efforts from Rabiu Ali, Ahmed Musa and Yahaya Ibrahim. He also made a double save and kept out a Rabiu Ali free kick shortly before the hour.
Kano were favourites, and they used five substitutes in search of a winner. However, they could not find a way past Lawani again. Voice of Nigeria reported no changes for Sporting Lagos. As a result, both sides took a point. It is a good result for a newly promoted side away from home, but Kano will feel they dropped two points.
Kano Pillars are unbeaten but winless in three, while Sporting Lagos are mid-table and winless in three as well. Kano opened with a 2-2 draw at Kwara United after leading by two goals. Then they beat Niger Tornadoes 3-2 and Doma United 4-1 at home. Since then they have drawn 1-1 at Inter Lagos, 0-0 at home to Enyimba, and now this game.
Kano have a new coach this season. Daniel Ogunmodede, who arrived from Remo Stars, replaced Muhammad Babaganaru in July, after Kano finished 15th last season on 48 points, according to Voice of Nigeria. Ahmed Musa, the former Super Eagles captain, is still a key figure at 33.
Sporting Lagos are back in the top flight after promotion in April. They won NNL Conference B and last played in the NPFL in 2023/24, when they went down. This season they lost 2-0 at Doma United on the opening day, then beat Inter Lagos 3-0 in the first Lagos derby in more than ten years. Ugwu scored in that win too. After that, they lost 2-0 at home to Abia Warriors, won 3-2 at Enyimba and drew 1-1 with Barau FC. They also drew 0-0 with Ikorodu City on 30 September.
That Ikorodu game led to a row. Buter criticised the referees afterwards, and Premium Times reported that the league fined and cautioned him. So the coach will be hoping for a calmer week.
The point leaves Kano Pillars 7th on 10 points from six games after Matchday 7, and Sporting Lagos 10th on 9 points from seven. Kano still have two wins and four draws, and no defeats. Sporting Lagos have two wins, three draws and two defeats. The gap to the top is small for both clubs, because Rangers lead the table on 16 points. See the live NPFL table and standings for the latest positions.
The recent record is thin, because Sporting Lagos were out of the NPFL last season. In the 2023/24 season, Kano lost the first game 3-0, then won 1-0 at home in March 2024, according to Daily Trust. So this draw is the first league meeting since then.
Kano Pillars played Shooting Stars in a rescheduled game on Wednesday, 7 October, and drew 0-0 at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan. They visit Plateau United on Sunday, 11 October, at 4pm WAT. Sporting Lagos host Bendel Insurance on the same day and at the same time, at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.
