Our Guinea-Bissau vs Nigeria prediction leans towards the Super Eagles avoiding defeat, but we don’t expect an easy night in Bissau. Both sides won on Matchday 1 of AFCON 2027 qualifying, so today’s game decides who leads Group L. Nigeria also go in with fresh fitness doubts over debut scorer George Ilenikhena and striker Akor Adams. Below you’ll find the kick-off details, form, team news, head-to-head record and our hedged betting angles.

When and where is Guinea-Bissau vs Nigeria?

Guinea-Bissau host Nigeria at 5pm Nigerian time (WAT) on Tuesday, 29 September 2026. The game is at the Estádio 24 de Setembro in Bissau.

  • Kick-off: 5pm WAT (4pm GMT)
  • Venue: Estádio 24 de Setembro, Bissau

How did Nigeria do against Madagascar?

Nigeria beat Madagascar 2-1 in Uyo on Friday, but only after falling behind to a 16th-minute header. Debutants George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor scored to turn it around.

The performance was mixed. On one hand, Nigeria dominated the second half and Alex Iwobi was excellent. On the other hand, Eric Chelle admitted his side were “too anxious” in front of goal, and Madagascar still had chances late on. Our full Nigeria 2-1 Madagascar match report covers the goals, the line-up and Chelle’s reaction.

What form are Guinea-Bissau in?

Guinea-Bissau arrive in good shape. They opened Group L with a 2-0 win away to co-hosts Tanzania, with goals from Franculino Djú and Mama Baldé.

As a result, the Wild Dogs top the group on goal difference. They’re also a settled AFCON side now, having reached several recent finals tournaments. At home they tend to stay compact and look for Baldé and Djú on the break, rather than chase the game.

Coach Emiliano Té has named a 25-man squad for this window. Alongside Baldé and Djú, it includes forwards Álvaro Djaló and Beto and midfielder Renato Nhaga, so Nigeria’s back four can expect a busy evening.

What is the Guinea-Bissau vs Nigeria head-to-head record?

Nigeria have won three of the four competitive meetings, and Guinea-Bissau have won one. The last three were all settled by a single goal.

  • January 2022 (AFCON group stage): Guinea-Bissau 0-2 Nigeria, in Garoua, with goals from Taiwo Awoniyi and William Troost-Ekong
  • March 2023 (AFCON qualifying): Nigeria 0-1 Guinea-Bissau, in Abuja
  • March 2023 (AFCON qualifying): Guinea-Bissau 0-1 Nigeria, in Bissau
  • January 2024 (AFCON group stage): Guinea-Bissau 0-1 Nigeria, in Abidjan (FIFA match centre)

In short, recent history points to a tight, low-scoring game. Nigeria also won their last visit to Bissau, which should help a squad with several new faces.

What is Nigeria’s team news?

George Ilenikhena and Akor Adams are doubts after both trained apart from the main group in Bissau on Monday. Victor Osimhen remains out injured, with Taiwo Awoniyi in the squad as his replacement.

The reasons for the separate sessions were not disclosed, PM News reported. According to ThisDay, Ilenikhena picked up knocks against Madagascar, so Chelle may have to improvise up front. Moses Usor, who scored the winner on Friday, Tolu Arokodare and Awoniyi are the options if either striker misses out.

The squad held a closed-door training session in Uyo on Sunday morning, 27 September, before flying out to Bissau the same afternoon, as Blueprint reported. The team landed at Osvaldo Vieira International Airport in Bissau at about 8:40pm on Sunday on a chartered flight, as Vanguard reported, and the full squad trained in Bissau on Monday.

Chelle started Stanley Nwabali in goal, with Ola Aina, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey and Bruno Onyemaechi at the back. Up front, Ilenikhena and Usor both made strong cases to start after scoring on debut, although Ilenikhena’s fitness is now in question. However, Chelle kept his plans private. “I cannot tell you whether we will play with that system or not,” he said, as Premium Times reported, adding that the team’s state of mind comes first. He also warned against complacency: “We respect them because they are a strong team; I have followed their progress over the years,” he said, as ThisDay reported. The full 24-man group is on our Super Eagles squad page.

Why does this game matter so much in Group L?

It matters because only one team from Group L can qualify. Tanzania are already in the finals as co-hosts, so Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar are fighting for a single place.

That means a defeat in Bissau would leave Nigeria three points behind their main rival after two games. A win, by contrast, would put the Super Eagles top with a head-to-head edge. Our AFCON 2027 qualifying guide explains the format in full.

What is our Guinea-Bissau vs Nigeria prediction?

We lean towards Nigeria avoiding defeat in a low-scoring game. Nigeria have more quality, but Guinea-Bissau are in form and at home.

  • Main angle: Nigeria or draw (double chance). Nigeria have won three of four meetings, including their last trip to Bissau.
  • Goals angle: under 2.5 goals. The last three meetings all ended 1-0, and doubts over Ilenikhena and Adams could blunt Nigeria’s attack.
  • Correct score idea: 0-1 or 1-1, at longer odds and for small stakes only.

These are opinions based on form and history, not certainties, and odds can move once team news is confirmed. For more games across Europe and Africa, see our football betting tips hub and our daily bet of the day.
