No rest for the Super Eagles. Four days after the Madagascar opener in Uyo, Eric Chelle’s side head straight into a tougher away assignment against Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, 29 September. A maximum haul from both games would be the perfect start to Group L.
This is the away leg of Nigeria’s opening AFCON 2027 double-header, and it comes with a different kind of pressure. Guinea-Bissau’s Wild Dogs will fancy their chances of a result on home turf, especially if Nigeria arrive with points already banked from Uyo. Meanwhile, the four-day gap between matches gives the medical team limited time to make that call.
Guinea-Bissau have grown into regular AFCON participants in recent editions, and they’re no longer the pushover some Nigerian fans might remember. On home soil, they tend to sit compact and look to hit teams on the break rather than take the game to bigger nations directly. That said, they lack the squad depth to sustain pressure over 90 minutes against a side of Nigeria’s quality.
For the Super Eagles, that means the away leg could actually open up more than the Madagascar game, provided Nigeria’s front players stay patient early and don’t force the issue. In fact, a settled performance rather than an urgent one is likely to be the difference-maker here.
Only one of Nigeria, Madagascar or Guinea-Bissau is set to join already-qualified co-hosts Tanzania from Group L, which is exactly why dropping points early would be costly. A perfect six from these two games would put Chelle’s side in complete control of the group heading into the next international window, while anything less immediately puts the October fixtures under the microscope.
