Victor Osimhen has arrived at this season in ferocious form. According to Galatasaray’s own coaching staff, the Nigerian striker has scored five goals and set up two more in just three matches, helping the Istanbul giants sit top of the Turkish Süper Lig table. That run of form means Osimhen goes into Galatasaray’s Champions League opener as one of the tournament’s most dangerous forwards, not simply a name fans recognise.
Ademola Lookman lines up at the other end of the Champions League draw with Atlético Madrid. His move to the Spanish capital hasn’t always been straightforward — question marks lingered over his exact role under Diego Simeone through pre-season — but he’s since found the net for his new club, a sign that his integration is progressing. Between them, Osimhen and Lookman represent Nigeria’s strongest presence in Europe’s premier competition since Super Eagles players first became regular fixtures at this level.
They aren’t alone in the Champions League group either. Samuel Chukwueze features for AC Milan, while Bruno Onyemaechi (Olympiacos) and Zaidu Sanusi (FC Porto) round out a five-man Nigerian contingent in the competition’s 36-team single-table format, now in its third season.
Six Nigerian players will turn out in the Europa League, which kicks off on its usual Thursday slot. Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi, now with Besiktas, brings leadership and experience to the group. He’s joined by Nathan Tella at Bayer Leverkusen, Frank Onyedika at Eintracht Frankfurt, and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru at SS Lazio — though Dele-Bashiru’s involvement will be watched closely given the thigh injury that has already disrupted his September with the national team.
Notably, Victor Boniface was left out of Bayer Leverkusen’s squad list for the competition, a reminder that not every Nigerian at a European club automatically gets a European stage this season.
At Conference League level, two of the summer’s most talked-about Super Eagles transfers will make their European debuts together. Femi Azeez and Zadok Yohanna both helped Brighton & Hove Albion secure Conference League qualification, and this competition gives them their first taste of continental football since arriving in England. Paul Onuachu and Chibuike Nwaiwu, both at Trabzonspor, complete Nigeria’s presence in the competition.
For Azeez and Yohanna especially, this is a fast introduction to a demanding European calendar on top of Premier League football — and, for Azeez, a possible senior Super Eagles debut in the same month.
As a result, Nigeria’s spread across all three UEFA club competitions this season is the broadest continental representation Super Eagles-linked players have had in recent memory. That matters beyond bragging rights: it means Nigerian fans have a reason to follow European midweek football almost every week from now until the knockout stages, rather than tuning in only when a handful of star names are involved.
It also feeds directly into Eric Chelle’s AFCON 2027 qualifying plans. Players such as Osimhen, Lookman and Ndidi arriving at the September international window on the back of regular European football — rather than bench time — is exactly the kind of form Chelle will want to see, even as his squad deals with a separate injury list heading into the qualifiers.
