Football Betting Terms Explained Nigeria | Odds, Handicap & BTTS 2026

Football betting terms explained for Nigerian bettors — that is exactly what this guide delivers. Whether you are new to betting on Sportybet, Bet9ja or 1xBet Nigeria, or you have been placing bets for years and want to understand the full range of markets available to you, this glossary covers every key term you need to know in 2026. Furthermore, understanding these terms is the foundation of making smarter, more profitable betting decisions — because you cannot pick the right market if you do not know what it means.

This guide covers odds formats, the main bet types available on Nigerian platforms, specialised markets, and key concepts like bankroll management and responsible gambling. Read through the full glossary or jump to the specific term you need using the section headings below.

Odds – The Starting Point for All Football Betting Terms Explained Nigeria

Odds are the foundation of every bet. They tell you two things: how likely the bookmaker thinks an outcome is, and how much money you will receive if that outcome happens. Nigerian bookmakers use decimal odds as standard.

Decimal Odds — The most common odds format in Nigeria and across Africa. A decimal number like 1.85 or 3.40 represents your total return per ₦1 staked. The formula is simple: Stake × Odds = Total Return. So ₦1,000 × 2.50 = ₦2,500 total return (₦1,500 profit). The original ₦1,000 stake is included in that total return figure.

Implied Probability — This is what odds tell you about the bookmaker’s view of an outcome’s likelihood. The formula is: Implied Probability = 1 ÷ Odds × 100. For example, odds of 2.00 imply a 50% probability. Odds of 1.50 imply 67%. When you believe an outcome is more likely than the odds suggest, you have found value.

Overround (Margin) — Bookmakers include a profit margin in their odds, meaning if you add up the implied probabilities of all outcomes in a match, they exceed 100%. This is the bookmaker’s edge. Sportybet typically runs a margin of 1%–8% on NPFL markets, meaning bettors collectively pay that percentage back to the bookmaker over time. Consequently, finding true value bets requires picking outcomes where your assessment of probability exceeds the bookmaker’s implied probability.

1X2 – Match Result / Win-Draw-Win

The most basic and widely used football betting market. You pick one of three outcomes: Team 1 Win (1), Draw (X), or Team 2 Win (2). The numbers come from the traditional football coupon format used across Africa and Europe.

For example, in a Rivers United vs Enyimba NPFL fixture: 1 = Rivers United win, X = draw, 2 = Enyimba win. This market settles after 90 minutes of regular time — extra time and penalties in cup competitions do not count unless the bookmaker explicitly states otherwise.

1X2 odds reflect the perceived strength of each team. A dominant home favourite might offer odds of 1.40 (1), 3.50 (X) and 7.00 (2). A competitive fixture between two evenly matched sides might be 2.20 (1), 2.80 (X) and 2.60 (2).

Double Chance

Double Chance covers two of the three possible match outcomes with a single bet. There are three options: 1X (Team 1 Win or Draw), X2 (Draw or Team 2 Win), and 12 (Team 1 Win or Team 2 Win — no draw). Because you are covering two outcomes, the odds are lower than a straight match result bet, but the safety margin is significantly wider.

Double Chance is particularly popular in Nigerian football betting for two reasons. First, NPFL fixtures often produce surprise results, so a double chance on the home side (1X) gives protection against an unexpected draw. Second, Super Eagles friendlies where Nigeria are strong favourites are ideal for 1X bets — you back Nigeria to win or draw at odds that still offer reasonable value without the risk of a straight win bet.

Over/Under Goals

This market asks you to predict whether the total number of goals in a match will be over or under a set threshold. The most common threshold is 2.5 goals. Over 2.5 means you need 3 or more goals to win. Under 2.5 means you need 2 or fewer goals.

Common thresholds on Sportybet and Bet9ja include Over/Under 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5. Each threshold carries different odds reflecting the statistical likelihood. Over 0.5 (at least one goal) is a very short price — most football matches have at least one goal. Over 4.5 is long odds because high-scoring matches are uncommon. Notably, Over/Under markets settle on total goals from both teams combined, and they include any goals scored in added time at the end of each half.

BTTS – Both Teams to Score

BTTS (Both Teams to Score) is one of the most popular markets among Nigerian bettors and one of the easiest to understand. You bet on whether both teams will score at least one goal each (BTTS: Yes) or whether at least one team will finish the match without scoring (BTTS: No).

BTTS adds excitement to any match regardless of the result. A 2–1 win for the home side means BTTS: Yes wins. A 1–0 wins means BTTS: No wins (the losing team scored nothing). A 0–0 draw means BTTS: No wins. Notably, BTTS combines particularly well with match result markets in same-game multiples on platforms that offer them — for example, “Arsenal to win and BTTS: Yes.”

In Nigerian football, BTTS: Yes tends to be more common in Premier League and Champions League fixtures than in NPFL games, where defensive solidity is often prized and many matches finish 1–0 or 2–0.

Accumulator / Multiple

An accumulator (also called a multi-bet or acca) combines two or more selections into one bet. All selections must win for the accumulator to pay out. Your total odds are calculated by multiplying the individual odds of each selection together.

Common accumulator types: Double (2 selections), Treble (3), Four-fold (4), Five-fold (5), and so on. Each additional leg multiplies both the potential return and the risk. Furthermore, a system bet is a variation where you cover multiple combinations from a group of selections — for example, a Lucky 15 covers all doubles, trebles and four-folds from four selections. System bets are available on 1xBet Nigeria but less common on Sportybet and Bet9ja.

Handicap Betting – Asian Handicap and European Handicap

Handicap betting is used to level the playing field when one side is a heavy favourite. The stronger team starts the match with a virtual goal deficit, which the bettor must overcome for their bet to win.

European Handicap: Team A is given a -1 goal start. If you back Team A -1 and they win 2–0, they win the handicap match 1–0 (2–0 minus 1 = 1–0). If they win 1–0, the handicap makes it 0–0, meaning the handicap selection is a draw. On a three-way handicap, that would result in a push or let refund depending on platform rules.

Asian Handicap: Asian handicap eliminates the draw from the equation by using quarter-goal lines (e.g. -0.75, -1.25). These create split bets where your stake is divided across two lines. Asian handicap is more complex but offers better value on lopsided fixtures. Furthermore, 1xBet Nigeria offers the widest Asian handicap coverage of any Nigerian bookmaker.

Correct Score

You predict the exact final score of a match. Because there are dozens of possible scorelines, correct score odds are much higher than any other market — a correct score of 1–0 in a balanced fixture might be available at 6.00, while a 3–2 prediction could be 40.00 or more. As a result, correct score bets are high-risk, high-reward and best used with small stakes.

Notably, correct score markets are a staple of Nigerian betting coupons, particularly in the NPFL and Premier League. Sportybet and Bet9ja offer correct score markets on most top-flight fixtures.

First Goal Scorer / Anytime Goal Scorer

You predict which player will score the first goal in a match, or simply whether a specific player will score at any point. Anytime goal scorer is the more popular of the two, as it gives you a wider window for the prediction to land. Odds for anytime goal scorer typically range from 1.80 to 5.00+ depending on the player and fixture context.

This market is popular for Super Eagles matches — betting on Victor Osimhen or Paul Onuachu to score anytime in a Nigeria friendly has been a profitable approach in recent seasons, given both players’ consistent goal records for the national team.

Cash Out

Cash out allows you to settle your bet before the match finishes, taking a guaranteed return rather than waiting for the final result. If your accumulator is going well with three legs done and one remaining, cash out lets you lock in a profit rather than risk the fourth leg failing. Alternatively, if your bet is losing, cash out may offer a partial refund to cut your losses.

Cash out values are calculated in real time by the bookmaker based on current match state and odds. Therefore, the available cash out amount is dynamic and changes with every goal, corner and minute of play. Sportybet, Bet9ja and 1xBet Nigeria all offer cash out on selected markets.

Void Bet / Push

A void bet is a selection that is cancelled and refunded — usually because a match was postponed, abandoned or significantly disrupted. In an accumulator, a void leg is typically removed from the bet, and the remaining legs continue. For example, a five-fold where one leg is voided becomes a four-fold, with the odds recalculated accordingly.

A push is a specific outcome in handicap betting where your selection lands exactly on the line — for example, you back Team A at -1 handicap and they win exactly 1–0. In that case, the bet is a push (tie) and your stake is usually refunded.

In-Play / Live Betting

In-play betting allows you to place bets after a match has started. Odds update in real time based on the live match state — who is winning, the score, time elapsed and other factors. In-play markets include match result, next goal scorer, next team to score, total corners and many more.

Sportybet and 1xBet Nigeria both offer strong in-play products on Premier League, Champions League and major international fixtures. However, in-play on NPFL matches is more limited due to the challenges of real-time data feeds for Nigerian football. Consequently, most NPFL betting is done pre-match.

Bankroll / Staking Plan

Your bankroll is your total betting budget — the amount of money you have set aside specifically for betting. A staking plan defines how much of that bankroll you risk on each bet. The most common approach is flat staking: betting a fixed unit (1–3% of your total bankroll) on every selection, regardless of confidence level. This protects your bankroll from a single big loss wiping out your entire budget.

As BBC Sport has reported in their coverage of responsible gambling, bankroll management is the single skill most strongly correlated with long-term betting enjoyment. Furthermore, it is the one area where most Nigerian bettors who lose money could make the biggest improvement, simply by setting and sticking to a weekly budget.
