Egypt enter this Group G finale in the strongest position of any African team on matchday three. Four points from two games — a hard-fought draw with Belgium and a commanding 3-1 win over New Zealand — puts the Pharaohs in the driving seat. A draw is all they need to reach the Round of 32. Iran, sitting on two points, must win to have any realistic hope of advancing.
For African football fans — and for the Nigerian audience who followed the Super Eagles’ painful exit at the CAF playoffs — the Pharaohs are the continent’s best hope tonight.
The Group G table heading into the final matchday could hardly be tighter at the bottom:
Egypt win or draw tonight, and they are through. Iran need a victory and hope that Belgium do not also win against New Zealand in Vancouver (04:00 WAT, same kick-off).
Belgium, playing simultaneously against the All Whites, know a win is also likely not enough if Egypt beat Iran — but it keeps them alive as one of the best third-place finishers. The permutations are complex, but for Egypt, the message is simple: do not lose.
The Pharaohs have exceeded expectations. Under coach Hossam Hassan, Egypt came in as outsiders in a group containing Belgium — a team with genuine European quality. They silenced the critics on matchday one, earning a creditable 1-1 draw with Belgium in which Mohamed Salah scored a penalty and dominated the second half.
Against New Zealand, Egypt were superior across the pitch. Salah opened the scoring before halftime, assisted Omar Marmoush for the second, and the Pharaohs ran out 3-1 winners in a display of controlled, counter-attacking football that raised eyebrows across the continent.
The template is clear: let opponents have possession, press high to win the ball back, and release Salah in behind. It is a plan that works when the Liverpool captain is on form — and tonight he is.
Iran arrive here having played two tight, low-scoring matches. A 2-2 draw with New Zealand opened their campaign — twice they led, twice they were pegged back. Then a frustrating 0-0 against Belgium in a match both sides appeared content to not lose.
Iran’s World Cup campaign has been defensively organised but toothless in attack. They have created few clear-cut chances and rely heavily on set-pieces and individual moments. Against an Egypt side with superior pace and Mohamed Salah on the ball, Iran’s defensive block will face its sternest test of the tournament.
Coach Amir Ghalenoei must go for it tonight, which means Iran will be more open than in previous games. That suits Egypt.
Mohamed Salah (Egypt): The captain and talisman. One goal and two assists in two games, fully fit after managing a minor knock against Belgium. Salah at a major tournament, with the stakes this high, is one of the most compelling viewing propositions in world football. Iran will have a detailed plan to neutralise him — but Salah has seen every plan.
Omar Marmoush (Egypt): The Frankfurt striker has adapted brilliantly to international football. Strong in the air, excellent link-up play, and two goals in this tournament. He pulls defenders wide and gives Salah space to operate centrally.
Sardar Azmoun (Iran): The most dangerous player in Iran’s squad. Has been isolated throughout this tournament, but given room to run he can punish. Egypt’s centre-backs will need to stay sharp.

Egypt are the team with form, motivation and a match-winner. They also know a draw is safe — but winning means a better Round of 32 draw. Salah and Marmoush are capable of unpicking Iran’s defence.
Egypt Double Chance (Win or Draw) — approximately 1.45
For those who want to back Egypt to advance without the risk of a competitive Iran side snatching a winner, the Double Chance at 1.45 is the conservative play.
Under 2.5 Goals — approximately 1.80
Both Iran and Egypt have defensive quality. Iran in particular have not conceded more than two goals in any game, and Egypt will not throw men forward recklessly when a draw suffices. A tight, tense match ending 1-0 or 1-1 is the most likely scenario. Under 2.5 goals is solid value.
Egypt to Win to Nil — approximately 3.50
Iran have scored in two of their two matches, but face a far sterner defensive test against Egypt’s organised 4-3-3. Worth a small stake if you think Egypt shut Iran out while Salah converts on the break.
