Charlton Athletic’s Arthur Okonkwo has earned a Super Eagles call-up for September’s AFCON 2027 qualifiers, joining Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye in a genuine goalkeeper battle.

Charlton Athletic confirmed on Monday, September 7, that goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has been called up to the Super Eagles squad for September’s AFCON 2027 qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau. For a 24-year-old with just two senior caps, it’s a significant vote of confidence.
Okonkwo came through Arsenal’s youth academy before loan spells at Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz, and he joined Charlton on a season-long loan this summer, making four appearances so far. What’s really caught Chelle’s eye, though, is what he did for Nigeria back in May: he started the Super Eagles’ 2-0 Unity Cup semi-final win over Zimbabwe at The Valley, producing a key save to deny the Warriors after the break, according to Legit.ng.

Breaking into a settled Super Eagles squad is never simple, though. Stanley Nwabali has established himself as first-choice in recent campaigns, while Udinese’s Maduka Okoye remains an experienced option Chelle has turned to before. As a result, the goalkeeper spot is shaping up to be one of the more closely watched decisions of the September window, not a formality for anyone involved.
That competition is exactly what NPFL and Super Eagles fans want to see — genuine pressure at every position after a difficult year for Nigerian football.
CAF has confirmed Nigeria will host Madagascar in Uyo on September 25, then travel to face Guinea-Bissau four days later. Nigeria sit in Group L alongside Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau and co-hosts Tanzania, and because Tanzania already have an automatic spot at the 2027 finals, only one other team from the group will join them — making early points critical.
