Brighton has beaten Chelsea and Newcastle to sign 19-year-old Nigerian winger Zadok Yohanna in a €28 million deal from Swedish side AIK. As a result, the move is now the biggest sale in Allsvenskan history, and it puts another young Nigerian talent on the Premier League map.
Yohanna joined AIK only in July last year, yet he needed just 18 appearances across all competitions to force his way out again. In fact, he scored five goals and added four assists in that short spell, including a dramatic 83rd-minute winner against Halmstad in April after missing an earlier chance.
That form attracted serious interest. Newcastle reportedly made an offer earlier this year, while Chelsea were also said to be tracking him. However, Brighton moved decisively, agreeing a Swedish transfer record fee and handing Yohanna a five-year contract at the Amex Stadium, according to a detailed profile by Goal.com.

Yohanna’s route to England started far from Sweden or Nigeria’s biggest cities. Born in Bauchi, he left home between the ages of 12 and 13 to join the Ikon Allah Football Academy – a wrench he has described as genuinely difficult at the time.
“It is very far from where my family lives, so it was very tough for me,” Yohanna told Swedish outlet Aftonbladet. “At first, I cried a lot because I missed everyone.” His father encouraged him to persist, and AIK’s scouts eventually spotted him during a 2025 scouting trip to Africa.
Meanwhile, teammates in Sweden quickly noticed his dribbling instincts. AIK winger Taha Ayari compared him directly to Barcelona star Lamine Yamal: “He’s like Lamine Yamal, wow. Sometimes I don’t really know what he’s going to do.” Veteran goalkeeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt added that “everyone sees that he has an extreme X-factor.”
Yohanna operates as an inverted right winger in a 4-3-3, cutting inside onto his stronger left foot to shoot or thread passes into the box. AIK’s scouting manager, Fredrik Wisur Hansen, praised “his dribbling, close-range technique, outstanding one-on-one ability and a sensitive left foot” when speaking to Expressen.
He also uses his height well in the air – he scored important headers against Elfsborg in the league and in a Svenska Cupen quarter-final. As a result, Brighton gets a genuinely two-footed attacking threat rather than a one-dimensional dribbler.
Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler was clear about the plan for his new signing. “He’s still young and will need time to adapt to the club and Premier League, but he’s an exciting player to watch and he brings the kind of creativity we know our fans will enjoy,” Hurzeler said. “He’s dynamic, has pace and likes to take players on.”
