Club history
Rivers United FC, based in Port Harcourt, were formed in 2016 after the Rivers State government merged Dolphins FC and Sharks FC to create a single, stronger representative club. The consolidation quickly paid off. Rivers United became one of the NPFL’s most consistent performers, regularly finishing in the upper half of the table and securing continental slots. They won the Nigerian league title in 2021–22, cementing their status as a new‑era powerhouse, and have been regulars in the CAF Confederation Cup and Champions League. With strong backing from the state, United benefit from good facilities and a deep squad, built around physical power and technical quality. Port Harcourt’s status as a major oil city also adds commercial weight and a passionate, urban fan base. Their clashes with Remo Stars and Enyimba often decide modern NPFL championships.
