When was Kun Khalifat FC founded?
Kun Khalifat FC were founded in 2020 in Owerri, Imo State, by businessman Michael Chukwudi Amaefula. They climbed from the third tier to the NPFL in five years.
The club started in the Nigeria Nationwide League One (NLO), the third tier, and first played at the Onwubike International Soccer Stadium in Ngor-Okpala. According to the club’s official website, they reached the NLO play-offs in 2021 and won the NLO in 2022 and again in 2024. Promotion from the Nigeria National League (NNL) followed in 2025, taking them into the top flight.
As a result, Kun Khalifat became one of a small group of privately owned clubs in an NPFL long dominated by state-backed sides. In August 2026, a letter from club president Amaefula to the NPFL said the shareholders were handing majority shares to a prospective buyer. However, the club then publicly dismissed reports of a sale as misleading, so the ownership picture remains unclear.
Where do Kun Khalifat FC play their home games?
Kun Khalifat FC play their home games at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, which holds around 12,000 fans. It is the traditional home of Owerri football and has also hosted Heartland FC.
The move to Dan Anyiam came with the club’s rise through the divisions. Before that, the smaller Onwubike Stadium in Ngor-Okpala served them in the lower leagues. In practice, Owerri gives Kun Khalifat a real home crowd, although they are still chasing their first home league win of 2026/27.
What honours have Kun Khalifat FC won?
Kun Khalifat FC have won two Nationwide League One titles (2022 and 2024) and the Imo State AITEO Cup (2022). They have not won a major national trophy.
- Nationwide League One champions: 2022, 2024
- Imo State AITEO Cup: 2022
- Promotion to the NPFL: 2025
- NLO play-offs: 2021
For a young club, that is a fast rise. Still, the real test is now to stay in the NPFL long enough to build a top-flight record.
How did Kun Khalifat’s first NPFL season go?
Kun Khalifat’s debut NPFL season in 2025/26 was a relegation fight that went to the last day. They beat Wikki Tourists in the final round to survive, while Wikki went down.
For long spells, Kun Khalifat sat in or near the bottom three alongside Kano Pillars and Remo Stars. By late February 2026 they were 19th with 28 points from 27 games, and the club changed team manager, with Ekpemandu Christopher Chijioke replacing former defender Ifeanyi Anaemena. Our 2025/26 relegation battle analysis tracked the run-in, and the final-day results confirmed their survival.
Who are Kun Khalifat’s key players?
Kun Khalifat’s key players in 2026/27 include centre-back Preye Seikorowei, forward Uchechukwu Onuoha and midfielder Hogan Umoh. Onuoha and Seikorowei have both scored this season.
In addition, Oghenetega Ebetomame and Ayuba Umar have each found the net, in the Bendel and Rangers defeats respectively. Meanwhile, the summer sales of Chikamso Amaefula, Blessed Iyamu and James Ekebuike to Rivers United took away players who had developed at the club. That pattern, where young players move on to bigger NPFL sides, has become part of Kun Khalifat’s identity.
Who are Kun Khalifat’s biggest rivals?
Kun Khalifat’s biggest rivalries are with the other South-East clubs, above all Abia Warriors in the Oriental Derby. Games against Enyimba and Enugu Rangers carry extra weight too.
The 2026/27 season opened with that Oriental Derby in Aba, which ended goalless. Closer to home, Heartland FC remain the traditional Owerri club, so Kun Khalifat are still building a following of their own in Imo State.
