Matchday 38 kicks off simultaneously at 16:00 on Sunday 24 May, as the NPFL has mandated for all remaining games to protect league integrity. Rangers travel to Lagos to face Ikorodu City at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena. Ikorodu finished the season mid-table, with little to play for on points — but they provided the stage for some of the biggest upsets in this campaign. A Rangers victory in Lagos seals the title regardless of what happens elsewhere.
Rivers United host Katsina United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt. Finidi George’s side are favourites to beat a Katsina team already safe from relegation. The question is whether Rivers can do their job and then wait for news from Lagos. Other Matchday 38 fixtures include Bendel Insurance vs Remo Stars, Plateau United vs Kano Pillars, and Shooting Stars vs Sunshine Stars, all of which carry relegation implications.
Rangers have been relentless in the second half of the season. They won four of their last six games and drew one, with their only defeat coming away at Enyimba in March — a result that did nothing to slow their title charge. Top scorer Godwin Obaje leads the Golden Boot race with 14 goals and will be looking to add to that tally on the final day.
Rivers United also arrive in strong form, having won their last three matches in succession. Finidi George has built a direct, physical side that punishes opponents on the counter-attack. Their home record is excellent — they have won 12 of their 18 league games at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium this season. If this were a straight head-to-head, you could make a very strong case for Rivers.
The critical difference is the away fixture. Rangers at Mobolaji Johnson Arena against an Ikorodu City side without a title prize on the line is a very different proposition from a home game. Ikorodu’s leading striker Joseph Arumala, who has scored 13 league goals this season, has just been called up to the Super Eagles Unity Cup squad. Whether he plays the final day or rests ahead of travel to London is a question worth watching.
The title race creates two separate markets that Nigerian bettors should approach carefully.
Rangers to win at Ikorodu City — Rangers are clear favourites at approximately 1.80 to win in Lagos. Their defensive quality (best in the division), superior squad depth, and the weight of a title on the line make them tough to stop. Ikorodu have nothing riding on this result beyond pride. Back Rangers to win with a -1 handicap at around 2.60 for value.
Rivers United to win vs Katsina United — Rivers are overwhelming favourites at roughly 1.45 at home. Katsina arrive safe and with a short squad. Expect a comfortable Rivers win. Rivers -1 AH is available at approximately 2.00.
NPFL Golden Boot: Godwin Obaje — Obaje enters the final day as top scorer with 14 goals. If Rangers are winning comfortably, he should get opportunity to add more. Back him to score at approximately 1.90.

Godwin Obaje has been the defining player of Rangers’ title push. The striker’s movement, link-up play, and clinical finishing have set him apart from any other forward in the NPFL this season. With 14 goals, he stands two ahead of his nearest rival. The Enugu crowd and millions watching across Nigeria will be waiting for his name on the scoresheet in Lagos.
For Rivers United, watch Finidi George’s front line to press early and establish dominance before half-time. If Rivers are two goals up by the break and news of a Rangers stumble filters through, the atmosphere at the Adokiye Amiesimaka will be electric.
Everything points to Rangers. Their form is better, their squad is more experienced in title-deciding moments, and they face an opponent with nothing to play for. Ilechukwu has been here before; his side know how to close out a season.
But this is the NPFL. Surprises happen. Ikorodu will not lie down. If Rangers go a goal down early and news from Port Harcourt suggests Rivers are winning, the pressure on the away dressing room will be enormous. Back Rangers, but prepare for a nervous final hour.
