Why You Can’t Withdraw Your Deposit from a Betting Site in Nigeria

You deposited money onto a Nigerian betting site. You have not won anything — or maybe you have. Either way, you try to withdraw and find the option is blocked, greyed out, or returns an error. This is a frustrating experience that catches many Nigerian bettors off guard, particularly those using a platform for the first time. The good news is that there are specific, well-defined reasons why this happens — and most of them have straightforward solutions.

Reason 1: You Have Not Bet with the Deposit Yet (Turnover Rule)

This is the most common reason Nigerian bettors cannot withdraw their own deposited funds. Platforms like MSport and SportyBet explicitly state in their terms that a deposit cannot be withdrawn without first being wagered. In other words, you deposited money to bet — not to save. If you try to withdraw immediately without placing any bets, the platform blocks the withdrawal.

MSport’s published withdrawal policy states directly that users who have “not placed enough bets” cannot withdraw — and that the maximum withdrawable amount is calculated as a multiple of total stakes placed plus winnings. SportyBet applies a similar rule. The fix is straightforward: place qualifying bets totalling at least the amount you deposited, then request the withdrawal again.

Reason 2: You Accepted a Bonus (Wagering Lock)

When you accept a welcome bonus or any promotional offer, your entire account balance — including your own deposited funds — is typically locked until the bonus wagering requirement is met. For example, if you deposit ₦20,000 and claim a 100% match bonus of ₦20,000 with a 5× wagering requirement on the bonus, you need to stake ₦100,000 in qualifying bets before you can withdraw anything — including your original ₦20,000 deposit.

If you just accepted the bonus and have not yet bet with it, contact support immediately — on many platforms, bonuses can be cancelled before they are used, releasing your balance. Once you have placed bets using the bonus balance, cancellation is generally not possible. For a detailed explanation, see our guide on betting bonus wagering requirements in Nigeria.

Reason 3: Your Account Is Not Verified (KYC Incomplete)

Most Nigerian bookmakers allow you to register, deposit and bet without completing full KYC verification. However, withdrawals above certain thresholds are blocked until your identity is confirmed. Log in to your account and look for a “Verification” or “Profile” section. Upload your national ID, passport or driver’s licence and link your BVN. Most platforms complete verification within 24–48 hours, after which your withdrawal will be processed.

Reason 4: Your Bank Account Does Not Match Your Registered Name

Withdrawals from Nigerian betting sites go to a bank account registered in your name. If the name on your betting account does not exactly match the name on your bank account, the transfer fails. Check both your betting account profile name and your bank account registered name. Contact the bookmaker to correct a name mismatch on your betting profile — provide your ID as proof of the correct name. This is a one-time fix that resolves the issue permanently.

Reason 5: You Deposited via a Method That Requires Withdrawal to the Same Destination

Regulated international bookmakers — particularly 22Bet, Melbet and Betway — apply AML rules that require withdrawals to be routed back to the same payment method used for deposits. If you deposited by card but are requesting a withdrawal to a different bank account, the platform may block or hold the request. Request the withdrawal back to the original payment method first. If you no longer have access to that method (e.g. an expired card), contact support — they have a process for verifying alternative withdrawal destinations.

Reason 6: The Platform Has Minimum Withdrawal Thresholds

Every Nigerian betting platform has a minimum withdrawal amount. Bet9ja’s is around ₦1,000, Melbet’s is ₦550, and BetKing’s bank transfer minimum is ₦1,000. If your balance is below the minimum, the withdrawal option may be blocked until you reach the threshold through additional betting.

What to Do If None of These Apply

If your deposit withdrawal is blocked and none of the above reasons match your situation, contact the bookmaker’s support team directly via live chat. Explain that you are trying to withdraw your own deposited funds — not bonus money — and that you have not found any explanation in your account settings. Ask the agent to identify the specific reason your withdrawal is restricted.

Keep records of the conversation, including timestamps. If the support team cannot or will not provide a clear reason for blocking a legitimate withdrawal of your own funds, escalate the complaint to the NLRC. As BBC Sport has noted in its coverage of African sports betting regulation, regulators in Nigeria have the power to investigate operator conduct and compel payouts where restrictions are found to be unreasonable.
