No African story this tournament was more emotional than Egypt’s. The Pharaohs reached the knockout stage of a World Cup for the first time in their history, beating Australia on penalties in the round of 32 before running into Argentina in the last 16. Egypt led twice through Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Ziko, only for Cristian Romero and Lionel Messi to drag Argentina level before Enzo Fernández headed a stoppage-time winner to break Egyptian hearts 3-2.

Ghana: The Standard-Bearer Falls Early

With Nigeria absent, Ghana carried West African hopes into this tournament, and the Black Stars did enough in the group stage to reach the round of 32 for just the second time in their history. Senegal, DR Congo and South Africa: Same Stage, Same Story

Three African sides shared the same fate in the round of 32. Senegal went out in a five-goal thriller, beaten 3-2 by Belgium. DR Congo — the side that eliminated Nigeria in the CAF play-off back in November — fell 2-1 to England.
