African Teams at World Cup 2026: History & Expectations

Africa at the World Cup 2026: A Record-Breaking Moment

For the first time in history, ten African nations will compete at a single World Cup. The expanded 48-team format for the 2026 tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico has handed CAF its largest ever allocation — nearly double the five or six slots that African teams have historically received.

For Nigerian football fans, this is a tournament to embrace. The Super Eagles may not have qualified, but West African representation is strong: Ghana (Group L), Senegal (Group I), Algeria (Group J), Ivory Coast (Group E), and Morocco (Group C) all have genuine ambitions.

Africa’s World Cup History: From Cairo to Casablanca

African football first appeared at the World Cup in 1934 when Egypt competed, but CAF teams became regular participants from 1970 onward.

The iconic moments that define African football at the World Cup:

  • Cameroon 1990 — Roger Milla and the Indomitable Lions reached the quarter-finals, the first African team to do so.
  • Senegal 2002 — Beaten France in the opener, reached the quarter-finals. One of the tournament’s greatest stories.
  • Ghana 2010 — The Black Stars were one penalty away from the semi-final. Suazo’s controversial handball robbed Africa of its greatest moment.
  • Morocco 2022 — The Atlas Lions became the first African (and Arab) team to reach a World Cup semi-final, beating Belgium, Spain, and Portugal along the way.

Until Morocco’s 2022 run, the ceiling had always been the quarter-final. That glass has now been shattered.

The 10 African Teams at World Cup 2026

Group A — South Africa 🇿🇦
Bafana Bafana are back on the world stage. Facing Mexico, South Korea, and Czech Republic, this is a group they can compete in.

Group C — Morocco 🇲🇦
The Atlas Lions are Africa’s strongest hope for a deep run. Against Brazil, Haiti, and Scotland, Morocco should top the group. A second consecutive semi-final is not out of the question.

Group E — Ivory Coast 🇨🇮
AFCON 2023 winners. Ivory Coast face Germany, Curaçao, and Ecuador. A Round of 32 place is achievable, and they have the squad quality to cause upsets.

Group F — Tunisia 🇹🇳
Tough group against Netherlands, Japan, and Sweden. Tunisia will need their best performances to advance.

Group G — Egypt 🇪🇬
Mo Salah’s last World Cup? Egypt face Belgium, Iran, and New Zealand. If Salah is fit and firing, Egypt can absolutely qualify from this group.

Group I — Senegal 🇸🇳
AFCON champions with a talented squad. Senegal face France, Iraq, and Norway. The chance to upset France in a group game is real.

Group J — Algeria 🇩🇿
Algeria face Argentina, Austria, and Jordan. A very difficult group — Argentina are defending champions and heavily fancied.

Group K — DR Congo 🇨🇩
First World Cup since 1974. DR Congo knocked Nigeria out in the playoffs to earn their spot. Facing Portugal, Uzbekistan, and Colombia — a tough debut.

Group L — Ghana 🇬🇭
Black Stars face England, Croatia, and Panama. The most winnable group for an African team outside Morocco’s.

What to Expect in 2026

Morocco have reset expectations for African football. Their 2022 run was not a fluke — it was built on a stable coach, clear system, strong defensive organisation, and a generation of European-based talent coming together at the right moment.

For 2026, the realistic expectations are:
– At least two African teams reaching the Round of 16
– Morocco as genuine quarter-final contenders again
– Ghana and Senegal as capable of Round of 32 qualification
– An African team reaching the semi-final is possible but would require everything to go right

The numbers back the optimism. With 10 teams instead of the usual 5 or 6, even if the individual per-team probability stays constant, the chance of multiple African teams going deep increases significantly.

Best African Bets for World Cup 2026

Morocco to reach the quarter-finals: Morocco are the best value African bet in outright knockout stage markets. They have the system, the players, and the experience. Available around 6.00–8.00 depending on the book.

Senegal to qualify from Group I: Despite facing France, Senegal are strong enough to take second. Their AFCON-winning mentality matters.

Ghana to qualify from Group L: A punchy bet at the right price. Beat Panama and Croatia, and they’re through.

Any African team to reach the semi-final: This bet was a long shot in 2022 and paid out. In 2026 with 10 African teams, the implied probability should be higher. Check specialist outright markets on Bet9ja.
