Player Spotlight: Alex Iwobi and Sadio Mane

Today’s player spotlights shine a light on some of football’s most exciting talents. Here’s everything you need to know.

Alex Iwobi

Iwobi becomes fourth Super Eagle to reach 100 international caps

Fulham FC / Nigeria Super Eagles | Midfielder | Nigerian

Key stat: 100 Super Eagles appearances — joining Ahmed Musa, Joseph Yobo, and Vincent Enyeama in Nigerian football’s centurion club

Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi reached one of Nigerian football’s most prestigious milestones by earning his 100th cap for the Super Eagles in their pre-tournament friendly defeat to Portugal.

Iwobi made his international debut as a teenager in 2015 and has been a consistent engine in Nigeria’s midfield for over a decade, choosing to represent Nigeria rather than England where he grew up.

Despite Nigeria missing out on the 2026 World Cup, Iwobi’s century of caps is a proud personal achievement and a reminder of his enduring dedication to the Green Eagles.

“100 caps for Nigeria is not easy. I’m grateful to everyone who has been part of this journey — my family, teammates and the coaches who believed in me. — Alex Iwobi”

Sadio Mane

Mane leads Senegal into World Cup battle with France — fully fit and firing at 34

Al-Nassr / Senegal Lions of Teranga | Forward | Senegalese

Key stat: 5 goals in World Cup qualifying — Senegal’s top scorer on the road to 2026

Sadio Mane, Senegal’s all-time leading goalscorer and arguably Africa’s most decorated footballer of his generation, is the undisputed talisman as Senegal take on France in today’s Group I clash.

Having missed the 2022 Qatar World Cup through injury, Mane returns healthy and motivated at 34 years old, with Saudi Pro League football keeping him sharp and fit.

He leads a side that also contains experienced European-based stars Kalidou Koulibaly and Edouard Mendy, and will be looking to repeat the legendary 2002 shock when Senegal beat France 1-0 in their opening World Cup fixture.

“We know what this game means. It is the biggest match of our lives and we are ready. — Sadio Mane”

— Sadio Mane
