Here is today’s round-up of the biggest football stories, brought to you by NigerianMatchday.com.

South Africa Beat South Korea 1-0 to Reach World Cup Knockouts for First Time

Thapelo Maseko’s 63rd-minute strike sends Bafana Bafana into the Round of 32

South Africa wrote a new chapter in African football history on Thursday, defeating South Korea 1-0 to qualify for the FIFA World Cup knockout rounds for the very first time.

Thapelo Maseko, who had endured a frustrating evening, stepped up to calmly control and finish a low cross from substitute Tshepang Moremi into the bottom corner in the 63rd minute.

Despite managing only 30% possession, Bafana Bafana created multiple chances and were thoroughly deserving of their victory.

The result sets up a Round of 32 clash with co-hosts Canada, and signals a remarkable turnaround after South Africa’s humbling nine-man defeat to Mexico in their tournament opener.

Nigeria Minister Says Country Is Not Happy With Super Eagles’ World Cup Failure

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike publicly expresses national frustration as 48-team tournament kicks off without Nigeria

Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has publicly condemned the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stating that Nigerians are deeply unhappy with the team’s performance during the qualification campaign.

Despite being the second-highest-ranked absent nation in the world — behind only Denmark — Nigeria failed to secure their place in an expanded 48-team field.

The absence is Nigeria’s second consecutive World Cup miss, following their failure to qualify for Qatar 2022.

The bitter irony is that over 16 players of Nigerian descent are representing other nations at the tournament, including the USA, Germany, England, and France.
